NAACCR is excited to introduce a valuable new tool to support pediatric and AYA (Adolescent and Young Adult) Abstracting: the Pediatric Resources Webpage.
This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to expanding pediatric and AYA cancer resources for registrars, researchers, and the broader cancer surveillance community and follows the development of the Pediatric Data Collection System (PDCS) to collect Pediatric Staging and Site-Specific Data Items (SSDI).
Beginning with 2025 diagnoses, select hospitals in SEER regions are required to implement the PDCS for ages 0-19 (ages 20-39 optional). Other facilities can collect PDCS on a volunteer basis. To do so, facilities should contact their registry software vendor to ensure the Pediatric API is included in the v25 upgrade. The NAACCR Pediatric Resources webpage provides up-to-date information and resources to support all registries implementing the PDCS.
The Pediatric Resources Webpage includes a variety of valuable tools to support your work with the Pediatric Data Collection System (PDCS), including:
🔹 Toronto Staging Guidelines
- Learn about the guidelines that helped shape the development of the PDCS.
🔹 PDCS training recordings
- Access trainings designed to assist registrars in collecting pediatric staging data elements required by the PDCS. Currently, two cancer types are available: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and Neuroblastoma.
🔹 Pediatric Coding Support
- Find instructions on where and how to submit questions related to pediatric coding.
🔹 References
- Explore curated references to deepen your understanding of pediatric data collection and cancer staging.
The development of this webpage and resources was made possible thanks to the outstanding work carried out by the NAACCR Pediatric SSDI Working Group. This Working Group has been instrumental in:
- Creating a comprehensive Pediatric Manual, containing detailed information on Pediatric Cancer, along with standardized sections by tumor group.
- Developing and providing support during implementation of the Pediatric Data Collection System (PDCS).
- Designing and implementing trainings to guide registrars with skills needed to use the PDCS.
The Pediatric Manual is currently under development and is expected to be available in late 2026. In the meantime, you can find information and portions of the completed work on the Pediatric Resources Webpage.
Stay tuned as we work to provide more resources to support the Pediatric and AYA cancer community.
