The revised law clarifies LTR’s authority to screen all pathology reports and medical records to identify reportable cancer cases and to request the electronic, real-time transmission of pathology reports, which enables using AI tools integrated into the LTR database to identify potential reportable pathology reports.
The law also affirms LTR’s authority to collect follow-up data, medical history, risk factors (e.g., diabetes), and cancer screening information—expanding the scope of data collection from the point of cancer diagnosis onward. These provisions enable LTR to use technologies such as electronic linkage and automated extraction from electronic medical records to gather comprehensive data that support cancer research, prevention, and control efforts.
Additionally, the legislation revises the composition of the cancer advisory board to reflect better the current landscape of cancer-related organizations in the state, positioning it to support LTR and its new initiatives and statewide cancer control activities more effectively.
